Obama’s Race
November 4th, 2008(This is also being published on associated content)
This article should in no way reflect any negativity for voting for Barack Obama this is just feelings I have towards a particular subject. Race.
I’m starting to get really annoyed. I’ve been fairly quiet until now, holding my tongue. But I just can’t take it anymore. As a biracial person, I cannot understand why Barack Obama, who was raised by the white side of him, is referred to - or - refers to himself as African-American. This is just bringing up a barrage of feelings in me that I can’t hold in any longer.
First: I take offense to his one sided race, because I’m biracial too. I’ve been brought up to identify with both races. I would assume that his mother would be offended that her presidential candidate son negates her existence.
Second: Are we moving back 150 years? If you had any black in you (1/8 - or one grandparent) then you were all black by law. Didn’t we fight this a long time ago????? Why is Obama running on the African American ticket if he is only half? I really hope that it’s not because he thinks it’s just easier, that it may confuse too many people to say mulatto. Why not tell the media he is proud to be biracial? If we’re going to stir things up in this election, why not go all the way?
Third: I’m so sick and tired of people saying African American - period. If you are talking about color - just say black already. Enough of this “political correctness.” When reading into Obamas race, you see that he is half white and half African American…..does this really make sense? He’s half black and half white. If we can say “white” then we can also say “black.” If you want to talk about cultures, that’s different. Thats when you get into African, Hawaiian, Asian, Italian, etc…. It’s just common sense.
I can only hope that if Barack Obama is elected, he will go down in the history books as “The First Mulatto American President.”
