The Metro
October 13th, 2008So I wanted to post a bit about the Metro. In case you have never seen a Paris Metro Map, here it is.
I suggest staying somewhere on the 4 line because it does cross many of the paths easily. I usually stay in the St. Michel area so I have access to many of the lines. I find it easiest to buy tickets by asking someone at a ticket booth at some of the major stations like Chatalet or at Les Halles (both are connected) by walking. However remember that the stations are closed on Sundays. They do offer machines that will sell you tickets but I have found them very difficult to operate.
As mentioned before I highly recommend the weekly pass called a Carte Orange. These are valid from Monday to Monday. An excellent idea.
Also there is a Paris Visite pass which you can get for a certain number of days. You can purchase for 1,2,3 or 5 day period and for certain zones. This is good for the weekly traveler. Also remember you need a pass for the escalator to get to the top of Sacre Coeur.
I think the Paris Metro is the easiest way to get around. It’s also very simple to get around. In one day I toured half of Paris just by Metro. I went from Montparnasse to Montmartre to Pere Lachaise. It was a long day but I saw many things and I did all by Metro. The metro tends to be very quick and some of the lines are extrememly fast. I would also they that the trains run about every 5 minutes or so, which is much quicker than some of the US subway systems.
